I just love finding out more and more about stuff on the net. I have been doing a ton of research on the internet into soap making supplies thanks to my initial post on soap making supplies. My wife is really interested in making designer soaps and candles as a way to make some money and feed her artistic cravings. I really think she would do good at it and maybe make some decent money.

I have been doing a lot of research on different supplies for us to get and how to set it up here in the house. I’d appreciate any comments from anyone with information on marketing the finished soap and candles.

Save Money With Canned Milk

Canned MilkWe were recently given a bunch of canned foods by my mom. It is great having a large selection of canned foods and I have started expanding the variety in my cooking. Included in the collection of cans is several cans of evaporated milk. It got me to thinking about the utility of this form of milk packaging.

Evaporated milk is milk with 60% of the water removed. This means you can pick up a can of evaporated milk and add water to reach one quart. It may not taste as great as fresh milk, but it does provide the nutrients the kids need in milk.

Sometimes, we add a 50% powdered milk with 50% evaporated milk combo and it really saves money, especially with the high price of milk. We keep the re-hydrated milk in the refrigerator for a few days and the kids get the milk they wanted. We have overcame some of the off-taste by adding chocolate syrup to the milk so it’s a chocolate drink.

One of the best resources out there on the web for helping you learn some interesting new topics is the Open Courseware Consortium. MIT started by putting their course notes and lectures in an attempt to make their information more accessible to teachers around the world. Thanks to the push by MIT, other universities have gotten into the act in order to help people throughout the world.

You can get lecture and class notes on many different courses and subjects. Instead of giving you a list of courses, it’s better just to go and take a look yourself so that you can browse the listings and see what interests you or is useful for your classes. You owe it yourself to take a look.

GCompris Educational Suite

Gcompris is a great program for helping kids learn. It is great for ages 3 up to about 8 or 9. The upper age level kind of differs by the maturity and English level of the kids. I find it very useful for my own childrenin fact, they just love it!

Gcompris is a powerful suite of educational programs. They have a paint program, several games of skills and of thinking and best of all for us TEFL teachers, they have some really nice vocabulary study modules. Kids can practice their ABC’s or they can practice finding words that are spoken to them. It’s fun and educational so spending a few hours on it can be a real blast for your students. My kids liked the math tutorial modules the most.

The best thing about Gcompris is that the Linux version is free. A limited Windows version is also available for free, but the full version is limited to people wishing to pay for the full version. Why? In order to encourage people to adopt Linux. You can find more about Gcompris on the Gcompris site.
